The Backbone of Diagnostics

Why analytical chemistry, multidisciplinary collaboration, and biosensing technology are all crucial for advanced research

Analytical chemistry plays a vital role in clinical research by enabling the precise and sensitive detection of biomarkers, which facilitates early diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and ultimately enhances patient outcomes. Recent advancements in biosensors, such as SiMoT (Single-Molecule with a Large Transistor) technology and CRISPR/Cas systems, offer ultra-sensitive and specific detection for a range of diseases, including SARS-CoV-2 and cancer. SiMoT, particularly suited for rapid, reliable point-of-care testing, is accessible even in low-resource environments. These emerging technologies underscore the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in developing advanced, cost-effective diagnostic tools that are accessible to non-specialists, aiming for a more preventive and accessible healthcare future.

Author: Luisa Torsi is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Bari and President of the Regional Center on Single-Molecule Digital Assay in Italy. Her research focuses on pioneering technologies in analytical chemistry, particularly in single-molecule detection and biosensing, significantly contributing to innovations in clinical diagnostics and research.
